Instructions
Melt butter in microwave and let cool.
Preheat oven to 350ºF.
Lightly grease an 8 inch or 9 inch square baking pan with butter and a light dusting of flour, or (preferred) line with parchment paper so that it hangs over two of the edges. (Optional: Greasing the pan before lining it helps it remain in place.)
In a large bowl, add granulated sugar and eggs and mix until foamy (about one minute). Add sour cream, melted butter, nutmeg, pure vanilla extract, and salt. Add cinnamon if using. Mix until smooth.
To the same bowl, add flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Combine until smooth, making sure the batter doesn't have clumps.
Pour the batter into cake pan. Bake for 25 - 30 minutes. It should rise and be golden brown. Test for doneness with a toothpick or a fork.
Allow to cool for 15 minutes. Add topping of choice.
Powdered sugar topping for donut cake
Melt butter, and spread over the top of the cake. You can leave the cake in the pan or remove it and set on a plate.
Sprinkle powdered sugar on top. Be sure to use it all. You want a nice layer.
