Peanut Butter Without Palm Oil | List of Palm Oil Free Peanut Butter

Peanut Butter Without Palm Oil | List of Palm Oil Free Peanut Butter

If you are looking for palm oil free peanut butter, be sure to read labels. You will find it. Companies use “No Stir” labels as a marketing strategy. Others may use “No Need to Stir.”

“No Stir” advertising on labels means there is palm oil in the product. It will be listed in the ingredients as Palm Oil &/or Mono- & Diglycerides.

Peanut butter manufacturers add palm oil so their peanut butter spreads easily. Many larger companies that label their peanut butter as “Organic” and “All Natural” use palm oil as well.

Peanut butter companies can no longer add artificial trans fats to their products to make them spread easily. This is because in 2018, the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) banned them. After they were banned, many peanut butter companies replaced them with palm oil.

Sometimes it will say Palm Oil on ingredient labels. Other times, it may list Mono- & Diglycerides. In peanut butter, these are typically derived from palm oil.

Peanut Butter Spread Contains Palm Oil

Also note, there is “Peanut Butter” and there is “Peanut Butter Spread.” These are not created equally.

These products will be next to each other on store shelves. Peanut butter spreads will contain palm oil plus many other ingredients. Read the front of the peanut butter jar to see if it’s peanut butter or a spread.

Crazy Richard's creamy peanut butter without palm oil

Crazy Richard’s 100% peanuts creamy peanut butter without palm oil

Crazy Richard’s Peanut Butter Co.

For over 100 years, Crazy Richard’s has been an additive-free peanut butter. Their peanut butter ingredients are simple and don’t include salt or sugar… just peanuts! Additionally, they recognize that hydrogenated palm oil isn’t a good thing.

I’ve used Crazy Richard’s Peanut Butter in peanut butter cookie recipes, and it’s very easy to mix. You can find this brand in many grocery stores.

Laura Scudders Peanut Butter

Like Crazy Richard’s and Teddie’s brands, Laura Scudders is a palm oil free peanut butter you are likely to find in many grocery stores, Walmart, Target, etc. Laura Scudders Peanut Butter is “All Natural” in the way peanut butter is meant to be: peanuts and salt.

Big thanks to the reader below in the Comments who mentioned Laura Scudder PB being palm oil free. I actually have their Smooth peanut butter in my refrigerator and have bought this brand for years. I had no idea I never put it on this list!

I love that I can buy Laura Scudders at my local grocery store and at Target. Choose from creamy/smooth and nutty/crunchy. They are both excellent.

Teddie Natural Peanut Butter

Teddie’s products are free from sweeteners, oils as well as anything artificial. The peanuts are grown in the United States and are Non GMO.

In addition, they use simple ingredients: peanuts. Some contain salt. Others flaxseed. At most, there are three ingredients… that’s it! You can find this peanut butter at Target, Walmart, Safeway, ShopRite, and more.

Kroger Natural Peanut Butter

A reader made a suggestion in the Comments about Kroger’s Natural Peanut Butter as being palm oil free and an inexpensive option. They don’t add oils, stabilizers, preservatives, or sugars. Their Natural Peanut Butter line contains only two ingredients: roasted peanuts and salt.

Easy-to-find at Kroger stores, this is an accessible brand. In addition, in the past I’ve contacted Kroger about some of their other products. I asked them about the source of some of their ingredients.

While most large companies avoid answering questions about palm oil, Kroger took extra steps to get me the information I asked for and were transparent about it. They asked their product development teams for the answers. They went above and beyond what other large companies (and even many small companies) have done.

Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter

Yay, another “natural” peanut butter that is indeed, actually “natural”! You’ll find just peanuts a and a bit of salt in these jars of Smuckers peanut butter. This is a readily-available brand and affordable product from a leading and iconic peanut butter and jelly manufacturer.

You can find Smuckers palm oil free pb varieties at Target, Walmart, Meijer, Kroger, Fry’s, Safeway, Albertson’s, and many other grocery stores, etc.

We are thrilled to learn Smuckers has palm oil free peanut butter options. Thanks to the reader who suggested we include it in this list.

Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter

  • Creamy
  • Chunky
  • Creamy No Salt Added

Smuckers Organic Peanut Butter

  • Creamy
  • Chunky

Note: Smuckers Goober Grape and Goober Strawberry, which combine peanut butter with jelly in one jar, contain Distilled Monoglycerides. These may or may not be made from palm oil. I avoid this ingredient.

RX nut butter without palm oil ingredients

Buy palm oil free peanut butter single serve packs.

RXBAR Nut Butter

I no longer trust the Natural Flavors that RXBAR uses. They do not disclose the source of their Natural Flavors.

RXBAR confirmed with me the following. “We do not use Palm Oil in our nut butter. We use refined coconut oil. It is found in all RX Nut Butter flavors.”

I hope they become Palm Oil Free Certified so consumers would know it’s made without palm oil. Their individual packets of peanut butter are always next to competitors’ PB packets (I’m referring to Justin’s) which DO contain palm oil. It would be smart for RXBAR to distinguish themselves with Palm Oil Free labeling.

Skippy

While there are hydrogenated oils in these products which are controversial, our focus is on palm oil free peanut butter.

Remember, it’s important for the Everyday Consumer to be able to find an easily accessible, industry-leading brand who doesn’t use palm oil in some of their products.

We are happy Skippy still makes some of their products without palm oil.

Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter

and Skippy Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter

Also note: All of Skippy’s Natural Peanut Butter Spreads contain palm oil.

Read labels for all of their products but you will find some without palm oil in the ingredients.

Skippy Good and Gather (Target brand)

If you shop for peanut butter at Target, check out Good and Gather Peanut Butter. You must read labels carefully but you will find some under this label that do not contain palm oil or mono- & diglycerides.

Choosing Palm Oil Free Peanut Butter

Thank you to these companies for making these lines of peanut butter without palm oil.

We looked at lists of alternate names for palm oil derivatives — there are over 500 names. To the best of our knowledge, the ones listed above are palm oil free. However, it is not guaranteed. The only way to know for sure is if the peanut butter manufacturers apply for Palm Oil Free certification.

no stir equals palm oil in peanut butter

“No Stir” is marketing for This Contains Palm Oil

How to Find Peanut Butter without Palm Oil

1.) Avoid “no stir” labeling.

Peanut butter companies who use palm oil may highlight “No Stir” on their labels.

They are trying to make it seem like it’s a good thing.

This means there aren’t oils to keep it together; the fat from the peanuts naturally separate to the top. This is okay. You just have to mix it. We store our peanut butter upside down. Just make sure to thoroughly seal the lid. This makes it easy to stir.

Also watch for Easy to Stir labels. Read ingredients because these peanut butter jars will typically contain palm oil.

2.) Buy certified Palm Oil Free peanut butter.

We await the day when marketing for peanut butter and other products includes “no palm oil” labeling as industry-wide advertising.

See all the work Orangutan Alliance and the International Palm Oil Free Certification Trademark (POFCAP) are doing to highlight palm oil free products with their “No Palm Oil” Certification labeling.

As stated above, Fix & Fogg certified their peanut butters and nut butters with Orangutan Alliance. Wild Friends earned this certification through POFCAP for making nut butters and peanut butter without palm oil as well.

As consumers, we can encourage companies to certify their products Palm Oil Free. We can also look for this labeling and buy products with it.

In addition, Spread the Love promotes “Palm Oil Free” on their labels, recognizing the significance of this, though they aren’t officially certified unfortunately.

Read labels and look for Palm Oil Free.

3.) Watch out for Mono- and Diglycerides.

These ingredients are typically made from palm oil in peanut butter and nut butter products. Mono- and Diglycerides are emulsifiers that manufacturers use to stabilize foods, such as peanut butter, mayonnaise, ice cream, baked goods, margarine, and others.

In nut butters, companies use Mono- and Diglycerides to prevent the oils from separating. We avoid all products with Mono- & Diglycerides because very rarely will the company spell out their source.

4.) Don’t buy peanut butter spreads.

Read the front of the jar to see how the company describes the product.

Peanut butter spreads contain palm oil ingredients.

In addition to having Palm Oil, peanut butter spreads contain many more ingredients than just peanuts and salt.

5.) Read all ingredient labels.

You might think because it’s advertised as “Natural” or “Organic” that it’s superior to labels without these claims. It’s important to note:

These Natural and Organic peanut and nut butters often contain palm oil.

6.) Look for peanut butter that needs to be refrigerated.

When there are hydrogenated oils added to peanut butter, it increases shelf-life and doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

Note: There are also peanut butters without palm oil that do not say to refrigerate.

7.) The less ingredients, the better.

When you have peanuts and salt, what more do you need? You won’t miss added sugar when you have your PB&J. Even better? Eat it with already-sweet fresh fruit or mix in some pure honey, etc.

Peanut Butter in Desserts

You’ll find premade desserts with peanut butter will most always contain palm oil. Make them at home and use peanut butter with just peanuts and salt. Use it to make peanut butter bars, cookies, pies, and more. You can even make a peanut butter milkshake. Yum!

There are lots of recipes you can make with palm oil free peanut butter.

Peanut butter cookies are easy to make. Some to try are sugar free peanut butter cookies, peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, and peanut butter cookies with 3 ingredients. You can also make peanut butter sauce to top ice cream or pancakes.

I now seem to remember that Walmart had a Smuckers "JUST PEANUTS" PB when I was buying PB there several months ago. Walmart also had Laura Scudder PB -- my choice for years. I noticed that LS was also made by Smuckers. There didn't seem to be any difference between the 2 products and the price was the same. So, I stayed with my usual PB. I usually buy groceries at HEB -- it's a lot closer to my house -- but it didn't have LS in stock on that particular shopping trip. Hence going to Walmart for PB that time. I also have to go to Walmart or further away to Sprouts to buy "regular" steel cut oatmeal since the nearest HEB doesn't seem to ever have it in stock -- just about 30 other oatmeal versions with additives or quick or instant versions. The other further away HEBs might have it. Even Target has it.

Laura Scudder PB is just made from peanuts and is now made by Smuckers. Used to be made by Bama. This is just about the only "JUST PEANUTS" PB I can buy locally, but I'll look for Crazy Richard at Walmart. It looks a bit less expensive.

What are your thoughts about Costco Organic Creamy Peanut Butter? Is it palm free?

editor

Monday 27th of February 2023

I am not sure about Costco Organic Creamy Peanut Butter. I will look the next time I go there and report back. (I just went yesterday, so it will be a few weeks.) If you go there, look on the label. If it says Organic Peanuts and Salt without anything else, it should be fine.

I found their Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy Peanut Butter online and the ingredients state: Dry Roasted Organic Peanuts and Sea Salt. I'm not sure how current the photo is. Always check on the label of the product you intend to buy.
